National Tree Day Australia
a televised broadcast event across Australia brought to you by NatureRx® | Planet Ark | Toyota
Australia's National Tree Day is an annual event that encourages Australians to plant trees and participate in environmental conservation activities. Established in 1996 by Planet Ark, a non-profit environmental organization, the day aims to engage individuals, schools, and communities in improving local environments by planting native trees and shrubs, and promoting biodiversity.
The event typically features thousands of organized planting activities nationwide, supported by volunteers, local governments, and schools. Additionally, a Schools Tree Day takes place on the Friday before National Tree Day to involve students in environmental stewardship,
This initiative helps foster awareness about the importance of trees in combating climate change, providing habitat for wildlife, and enhancing community well-being
In 2016, NatureRx partnered with Planet Ark for a national campaign for Australia's National Tree Day, promoting the physical and mental health benefits of spending time with nature. Directed by Justin Bogardus, the creator of NatureRx, the campaign utilized humor by spoofing a prescription drug commercial to highlight how nature can serve as "good medicine" for society’s ills. This creative approach was inspired by NatureRx’s original spoof drug commercials and Planet Ark's 2016 report, "Adding Trees – A Prescription for Health, Happiness, and Fulfillment," which presented scientific evidence supporting the health benefits of time in nature.
….broadcast across Australia…
This engaging campaign, which was broadcast on TV across Australia, reinforced National Tree Day's message of environmental conservation and personal health. By collaborating with Planet Ark, Nature Rx reached a broad audience, inspiring Australians to participate in tree planting activities and spend more time outdoors. The clever mix of humor, science, and environmental activism made it a memorable and effective campaign.

The commercial underscored research showing that spending as little as 10 minutes outside can significantly reduce blood pressure, and spending time in nature lowers the risk of developing various diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. This campaign effectively combined insightful messaging with comedic elements, encouraging viewers to reconnect with nature to improve their well-being and strengthen relationships. Filmed in the Blue Mountains, the video received widespread exposure online and through traditional media channels, supported by sponsors like Toyota.
